A gynaecologist is a doctor who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the female reproductive system. A gynecologist is usually the most competent specialist who can adequately approach a problem related to women's health. What examinations does a gynaecologist perform ?

There are several basic examinations that can be done when you visit a gynaecologist. What the nature of the examination will be depends on your age, your sexual history and the complaints you have. These are:

• Standard clinical examination - includes medical tests, weight measurements and vital signs - such as blood pressure and heart rate.
• Breasts examination - by palpating the chest to check for lumps.
• Vaginal smear - biological material (sample) is taken from the uterine walls, which are sent to a laboratory for examination. The purpose is to determine the presence of cancerous growths or problems in the internal structure of the uterus.
• Vaginal examination - is done in women with complaints in the vaginal area and abdomen. It involves examining both the outside of the genitals and the internal structures such as the cervix and ovaries. Screening is done to detect the presence of infections and sexually transmitted diseases or to follow up for atypical changes.
• Vaginal ultrasound - involves the use of an ultrasound, which creates images of the internal part and gives more detailed information to the gynecologist about the state of the reproductive organs and the presence of abnormalities.
