Cardiology

Кардиология

Cardiology is called a branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the heart and blood vessels. It is part of the broader medical specialty of internal medicine, which also includes gastroenterology, endocrinology, pulmonology, and others. Cardiology deals with various conditions of the cardiovascular system, including coronary syndromes, hypertensive crises, inflammatory diseases of the heart, and heart failure. The word cardiology has Greek origins ( from Greek kardiā, heart ; logia, study ). Subdivisions of this specialty for interventional cardiology and echocardiography.

What is a cardiologist ?

Doctors who specialize in the field of cardiology, logically, are called cardiologists. A cardiologist's expertise focuses narrowly on the treatment and study of diseases of the cardiovascular system. Cardiologists may practice in a hospital setting as well as in medical centers and private offices. A major part of the cardiologist's job during an examination is to measure vital signs - blood pressure and pulse, and also to check the patient's breathing, weight, and height. Depending on the complaints, the cardiologist may perform additional tests.

Studies that the cardiology specialist conducts are:

  • Electrocardiography (ECG) - an examination in which heart activity is checked.
  • Ultrasound examination - ultrasound images of the inner part of the heart are taken.
  • Stress test - test for the change in heart rate at rest and with increased physical exertion.
  • Holter ECG - a small portable device is worn for 24 hours by the patient, during which it records the electrical activity of the heart.

An important distinction to make here is that the cardiologist does not perform surgical interventions, that is the job of the cardiac surgeon.

Cardiology is a complex and intricate discipline that requires detailed knowledge of human anatomy and the way the body functions. For this reason, cardiologists are highly educated specialists who undergo a long period of training (over 8 years) before they start practicing the profession.

Cardiovascular system

кардиология

The cardiovascular system, which is the focus of the science of cardiology, encompasses the heart, the blood vessels and the blood flowing in them. The blood serves to carry oxygen and numerous substances to the various organs in the body that are vital for them to function. The organs then expel the unnecessary elements back into the blood, which clears them from the body. The main task of the cardiovascular system is to ensure that blood reaches all parts of the body and removes all unnecessary substances from the body.

When is it necessary to see a cardiology specialist?

In a large percentage of cases, people with complaints first visit their GP who, after a brief examination, finds that the patient needs to see a cardiologist to have their condition diagnosed. It is good to know that the job of the cardiology specialist is not only to treat symptoms and heart disorders that have already manifested, but also to prevent them from occurring. Performing preventive checkups is highly recommended for people who have a family history of heart disease and also high cholesterol, actively smoke or have diabetes. Visiting a cardiologist once a year would help in early diagnosis of the initial symptoms of heart disease, and this would save a lot of complications later on.

Some of the symptoms that would prompt your GP to refer you to a cardiologist are:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain
  • Irregular heart rhythm
  • High blood pressure

Heart conditions that a cardiology specialist deals with are:

  • Atherosclerosis
  • Arrhythmia
  • Coronary syndromes
  • Hypertensive crises
  • Inflammatory heart diseases
  • Heart failure
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Mild cases of pericarditis
  • Ventricular tachycardia

Cardiologists often treat patients who have suffered a heart attack and those with heart failure. They help decide on performing heart surgery, catheterization, stent placement, etc.
