The presence of pigment spots on the skin is something that most of us have encountered and not once. We usually start asking ourselves questions like, "Is it possible to completely remove pigment spots on the face, hands and body?" Often, the easiest and most innocuous answer we come to after a short research is the use of special pigmentation whitening creams. Many times, however, the effect of these is only partial or temporary, especially when we are talking about a large number of darker pigmentations that require more serious impact to be removed. The most effective and safest method of removing them is through the use of a laser, which within a few short treatments manages to painlessly break up the pigment in the areas and thus achieve the complete removal of pigment spots - regardless of their depth, coloration and number.
As you well know skin contains a pigment called melanin. Its role is to protect our body from the harmful radiation of UV rays. This is the reason why we tan and when we bake in the sun our skin gets darker with the amount of sunlight it has been exposed to. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes. Sometimes as a result of excessive sun exposure, some melanocytes begin to synthesize excessive amounts of melanin as a protective reaction. The excess pigment cannot be distributed evenly over the skin and accumulates in certain spots, which we know as pigment spots. Other cause of their appearance are also pregnancy, hormonal changes, age and certain medications.
To remove pigment spots with a laser, a specially designed laser technology is used - the so-called. Nd:YAG Q-Switched laser. The light it emits is absorbed entirely by melanin, which builds up large amounts of energy that manage to break down melanocytes (melanin-producing cells). The pigment produced is "scattered" in the surrounding tissues, which begin to push them to the surface of the skin. The treated pigmentations are then sloughed off along with the dead cells. The great advantage of Nd:YAG Q-Switched the technology of laser pigment spot removal on the face and body is that it acts selectively only on the areas with accumulated melanin without affecting the adjacent healthy tissues. This is what makes it so safe and effective in erasing excessive pigmentation, as well as tattoos, the principle of action is the same. The recovery period is limited to avoiding intense sun for about 2 weeks.
Melasma - usually occur in pregnant women, mostly in the facial area. They also appear when taking contraceptives.
Sunspots - are formed due to exposure to sunlight. Age and skin colour also affect their appearance.
Pigmentations after inflammations or injuries (pimples, burns) - When the skin is inflamed, more melanin is synthesized - the excess amount leads to the appearance of pigment spots.
Removing pigment spots with a laser is a painless and quick therapy, so there is no need to numb the area. The skin is cleaned, then the dermatologist treats the pigmentation with the laser. The sensation of discomfort is absent in most patients - occasionally you may feel a slight warming and prickling in the area. After the procedure, you can return to your daily activities. The only condition is that you do not expose your skin to the sun and do not visit a tanning bed for a period of time. You will be prescribed the use of a 50+ factor sunscreen. The aim is to avoid re-pigmentation of the skin during the period when it is more vulnerable.
For the removal of pigment spots one treatment is rarely enough, usually about 4-5 treatments over several weeks are needed to achieve their complete removal. Immediately after the procedure, the treated area turns white within a few minutes. In the following days, the pigmentations become darker due to the laser radiation, but it is not long before their intense flaking begins, which lasts between 1 and 2 weeks. This eventually leads to the gradual "shedding" of the pigmentations from the skin.
